The United World Wrestling (UWW) has exceptionally declared Hungarian wrestler David Losonczi, who was defeated by national athlete Ali Cengiz in the Greco-Roman 87kg final at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships, a second champion due to an alleged referee error during the match.
In a statement released by the UWW, it was noted that members gathered in Switzerland to review several issues, including the result of the Greco-Roman 87kg final match held in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.
The statement, which claimed that it was acknowledged that a referee error had occurred that changed the outcome of the match, included the following remarks:
"Considering that the referee error was indisputable according to expert analysis, the UWW has determined that it is necessary to exceptionally award Losonczi a second gold medal in this category and has declared him a world champion as well."
It was learned that this decision is a first in the history of wrestling.
In the event held in September, Ali Cengiz defeated his opponent with a score of 8-7, winning the gold medal and becoming the world champion.
