In the first match of Group A at the European Football Championship (EURO 2024), Switzerland defeated Hungary 3-1.

In the first week of the European Football Championship held in Germany, Hungary and Switzerland faced off at Cologne Stadium in Group A. In the match officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, Switzerland took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with a goal from Kwadwo Duah. 

Taking control of the match, the red-and-whites did not allow the Hungarians to pass through their defense. Michel Aebischer, who provided the assist for the first goal, sent the ball into the net with a stylish shot from in front of the penalty arc in the 45th minute, extending the lead to 2. In the second half, which saw attacks from both sides, Murat Yakin's students were given hope in the 66th minute by Varga's goal. Following a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai from the left wing to the back post, Barnabas Varga sent the ball into the net with a header from close range.

In the 90+3rd minute of the match, Embolo intercepted the ball that Willi Orban attempted to clear with a header, and sent it into the net with a chip shot over goalkeeper Gulacsi, making the score 3-1. The match ended with this goal, and Switzerland secured 3 points in their first match.
