EuroLeague Final Four to make history in Abu Dhabi

The THY EuroLeague, the most prestigious tournament in European basketball, is set to break new ground this year by hosting the Final Four outside the European continent. The capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, will host this major event from May 23 to 25.
In the EuroLeague, which began in 1958, finals were initially played over two legs, but the single-game format was adopted in 1966, and all finals to date have been held in Europe. The first Final Four was held in Ghent, Belgium, in 1988.
ABU DHABI'S RISING STAR
The strategy behind Abu Dhabi hosting this event lies in leveraging the financial power of the Arabian Peninsula. With this move, the EuroLeague aims to expand its international audience. Abu Dhabi's growing role in international sporting events was a key factor in this decision. The 18,000-seat Etihad Arena on Yas Island will host the four best basketball teams in Europe. This arena previously hosted the U.S. National Team's preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
A HISTORIC TURNING POINT
The UAE will go down in history as the 14th country to host the EuroLeague Final Four. Since 1988, 13 different countries have hosted this organization.
While Spain has hosted the most Final Fours with 8, Germany has hosted 6, France 4, and Turkey, Italy, and Greece have each hosted the event 3 times.
Israel and Serbia have hosted twice each, while Belgium, Russia, the Czech Republic, England, and Lithuania have each hosted once. Paris holds the record for the city that has hosted the most Final Fours with 4, while Istanbul, Berlin, and Barcelona have each hosted the event 3 times.
