FIFA announces: Palestine's request to 'suspend Israel from football' will be decided

The Palestinian Football Association (PFA), with the support of the Asian Football Confederation of which it is a member, requested the suspension of Israel from football at the 74th FIFA Congress held in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

In his speech at the congress, PFA President Jibril Rajoub stated that Israel has violated FIFA rules and demanded that the country's membership be "immediately" suspended.

Rejecting calls for a vote at the congress, FIFA President Infantino noted that the issue must be addressed by the FIFA Council, which is the decision-making body.

'EXTRAORDINARY MEETING TO BE HELD BY JULY 20'

In his speech at the congress, Infantino stated: "FIFA will immediately appoint an independent legal expert to evaluate the three requests made by the Palestinian Football Association and to ensure that FIFA's statutes and regulations are applied correctly.

Due to the urgency of the situation, the FIFA Council will hold an extraordinary meeting by July 20 to review the results of the evaluation and take appropriate decisions."

The world and European football governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA, have previously taken action against member countries due to the actions of their governments, having banned Russian teams from competitions following Russia's military intervention in Ukraine two years ago.
