FIFA announces strict stadium rules ahead of 2026 World Cup: Clear bag policy introduced

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the rules for fans entering stadiums have been clarified. According to the regulations announced by FIFA, comprehensive restrictions will be applied to bags, liquid containers, noise-making devices, and visual materials allowed in the stands.

It was stated that spectators who do not comply with the rules may be turned away at the stadium gates, and in such cases, ticket fees will not be refunded. Therefore, football fans planning to attend matches are advised to check the tournament guide and stadium entry rules in advance.

CLEAR BAG REQUIREMENT

Under the new rules, only bags made of clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC will be allowed into the stadiums. Backpacks, cooler bags, suitcases, and large packages will not be accepted. Even if a bag is of an appropriate size, items that do not meet the transparency requirement will not be permitted inside.

Permitted clear bags may be no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or approximately 30 x 15 x 30 centimeters. A limited exception will be granted for small, non-transparent handbags and wallets; such bags must be approximately the size of a hand and no larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches.

A separate exemption will apply to fans who must carry medication or equipment for medical reasons. However, these bags will also be subject to detailed inspections at stadium entrances. Camera bags, cases, and similar personal storage items will be subject to the same size and transparency standards.

FIFA has also introduced restrictions on liquid containers. Water bottles, thermoses, and hard-sided water containers will not be allowed into the stadium. Fans will only be permitted to bring empty, clear plastic bottles; these bottles must not exceed a volume of approximately 1 liter.

Devices that produce loud noises in the stands are also on the prohibited list. In addition to noise-making devices such as vuvuzelas, whistles, and air horns, items such as weapons, explosives, tools, helmets, lighters, matches, smoke bombs, and spray cans will not be accepted at the gates.

Under the stadium code of conduct, clothing and banners will also be subject to inspection. It was reported that clothing, flags, brochures, and banners of a political, offensive, provocative, or discriminatory nature will not be allowed into the stands.
