It is alleged that FIFA is preparing for a surprise decision regarding the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
According to a report by The Athletic, FIFA has put the option of playing the tournament with 64 teams on the table. If the request from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) to increase the number of participants is supported, the number of teams taking part in the championship will reach an unprecedented level in history.
In the new format, a total of 16 groups will be formed, with 4 teams in each group. Those who finish their groups in the top two spots will advance directly to the play-off stage.
Additionally, as a special tribute to the 100th anniversary of the tournament, the national teams of Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will play their first matches in their own countries. It is stated that this practice will be a symbolic gesture emphasizing the deep-rooted history of the World Cup.
