FIFA President Infantino apologizes for errors following private investment plan for tournaments

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has apologized to member federations following the crisis caused by plans to open FIFA organizations, including the World Cup, to private investors.

In a letter sent to the 211 member federations following a meeting with the FIFA board in Rabat, Morocco, Infantino acknowledged that mistakes were made during the process and stated that he "sincerely apologizes." The letter also included a commitment to ensure that similar situations do not occur again.

At the center of the crisis is a proposal that envisions receiving private investment for FIFA tournaments, including the men's and women's World Cups. It had been reported that Infantino offered 40 million dollars to each of the 211 FIFA-affiliated member federations if they supported the plan.

It was notable that a statement of support for Infantino was issued approximately four hours after the meeting in Rabat concluded. Conversely, during the recent crisis, statements had emerged from the UEFA front indicating that trust in the FIFA President had been lost.

2030 WORLD CUP FINAL ALLEGATION

The Times newspaper published its report on Infantino's private investment plan on July 28. In the FIFA President's letter, while it was acknowledged that mistakes were also made after the proposal was leaked to the press, it was stated that the institution "will take all necessary measures to protect its name and reputation."

FIFA also denied the allegation that Infantino promised Morocco the right to host the 2030 World Cup final in exchange for support. The institution argued that the claim in question was "baseless and misleading."

In addition to Morocco, Spain and Portugal will also host the 2030 World Cup. It was stated that the decision regarding which country will host the final will be made "when the time comes."

Infantino, who has been serving as FIFA president for approximately 10 years, was re-elected unopposed in 2019 and 2023. For now, Infantino is the only person to have announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidential election scheduled to be held in Rabat in March 2027.

The application deadline for candidates wishing to run for the presidency will expire on November 18. Behind the scenes, Paris Saint-Germain President and European Club Association Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani are being mentioned as potential names.
