The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has introduced a 'blue card' proposal to be used in cases such as simulation or dissent towards referees.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino made a statement regarding the 'blue card' application, which would temporarily send players off the field.

"FIFA IS COMPLETELY AGAINST THE BLUE CARD"

In his statement before the IFAB meeting in Scotland, Infantino said, "There will be no blue cards used at the elite level. This is a topic that is not on the agenda for us. FIFA is completely against the blue card. As the FIFA president, I was not aware of this situation."

"WE NEED TO PROTECT THE GAME ITSELF"

Infantino further stated regarding the issue, "I believe FIFA has a say in IFAB. If you want a response to the blue card, it is a red card. We are always open to ideas and proposals, but we need to protect the game itself."

WHAT IS THE BLUE CARD APPLICATION?

Following the yellow and red cards first used in the 1970 World Cup in football, the use of a new card came to the agenda last month.

It was stated that IFAB proposed using the blue card for actions intended to deceive referees or for dissent, and that a player receiving a blue card would remain out of the game for 10 minutes.

It was noted that players would be sent off if they received two blue cards or one blue and one yellow card.

It was stated that IFAB is not currently considering implementing this application in top-tier leagues, but that this trial could be conducted in some leagues during the summer months.
