Formula 1 is coming to Madrid in 2026! After a 45-year hiatus

Madrid, the capital of Spain, will host Formula 1 races starting in 2026. The agreement signed between the International Automobile Federation (FIA), the autonomous government of Madrid, and the Madrid City Council was unveiled at the IFEMA Exhibition Center.

Under the agreement that brings Formula 1 back to Madrid after a 45-year hiatus, the Madrid circuit will host Formula 1 races between 2026 and 2035.

According to the draft to be approved by the FIA, the Madrid circuit will be 5,474 meters long. The track will feature 20 corners, 8 overpasses, 2 tunnels, and 4 overtaking points. The average lap time for a qualifying session is planned to be 1 minute and 32 seconds.

The circuit, which will have a total capacity of 110,000 spectators, will be built through private investment. Formula 1's arrival in Madrid is expected to provide an economic contribution of approximately 450 million euros per year to the city.

Madrid last hosted Formula 1 races in 1981. That year, the races were held at the Jarama Circuit, located in the district of San Sebastian de los Reyes, 30 kilometers outside the capital.
