In the 20th week of the Süper Lig, Antalyaspor hosted Trabzonspor. During the match, which ended 1-1, Antalyaspor's Israeli footballer Sagiv Jehezkel's goal celebration sparked backlash.
After scoring, Sagiv Jehezkel displayed the date October 7, 2023—the day the Israel-Hamas war began—and the Star of David, which were written on the bandage on his wrist.
EXCLUDED FROM THE SQUAD
Following the goal celebration that caused reactions, Jehezkel was excluded from the squad, and the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into him.
DETAINED
Teams from the Antalya Provincial Police Department's Sports Branch and Counter-Terrorism Branch detained Sagiv Jehezkel.
JEHEZKEL'S STATEMENT REVEALED
Taken to the Public Security Branch, Jehezkel gave his statement through an interpreter.
According to the report on NTV, it was learned that Jehezkel said in his statement: "I did not make a move to incite or provoke anyone. I am not a pro-war person. And after all, there are Israeli soldiers who have been taken prisoner in Gaza. I am someone who believes that this 100-day process should now come to an end. I want the war to end. That is why I showed the sign here. I am someone who has nothing to do with politics. Since I arrived, I have never done anything related to politics. Since the day I arrived, I have never shown disrespect to anyone. The point I wanted to draw attention to was that the war should end."
Sagiv Jehezkel will be referred to the courthouse at noon following his procedures at the police station.
