The 53rd White Marlin Open Fishing Tournament, held in Ocean City, Maryland, in the USA, featured million-dollar prizes. During the six-day event, 334 boats competed to claim a share of a prize pool totaling approximately 10 million dollars.
The tournament's biggest prize came with the catch by Bill Sharpe, who participated from South Carolina. On Thursday, Sharpe caught a white marlin weighing approximately 36.3 kilograms on the boat named “Mister Pete.” This catch, which maintained its lead in the main category until the end of the tournament, earned the boat 3 million 503 thousand 891 dollars.
Other catches that crossed the million-dollar threshold were also recorded in the competition. James Hood received a prize of 1 million 818 thousand 546 dollars with a 31.8-kilogram white marlin he caught on the “Bull Pen” boat, bolstered by additional entry options. Kelly Weber, meanwhile, won 1 million 271 thousand 797 dollars with a blue marlin weighing approximately 275.6 kilograms on the “MaxBet” boat.
DOUBLE SUCCESS WITH TUNA AND WAHOO
Another notable name in the tournament was John Wardlaw from the “Gray Fox” boat. Wardlaw earned 1 million 18 thousand 653 dollars with an 81.2-kilogram tuna on Wednesday, and 72 thousand 380 dollars with a 31.5-kilogram wahoo catch on Thursday.
Among other rankings, Kevin Howell’s 32.4-kilogram white marlin brought in 360 thousand 721 dollars, Robert Leerink’s 66.5-kilogram tuna earned 175 thousand 265 dollars, Anthony Rubino’s 50.1-kilogram blue marlin secured 111 thousand 965 dollars, and Ryan Jones’s 20.4-kilogram mahi-mahi catch brought in 22 thousand 602 dollars.
Tournament Director Madelyne Wainglass, in her assessment following the organization, stated that there were dynamic moments on the leaderboard throughout the competition and expressed that the tournament was unforgettable.
