An investigation has been launched into some footballers currently playing in Italy's Serie A and those who have played in the league in the past, over allegations that they conducted transactions on illegal betting sites.
According to reports in Corriere della Sera, the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting an investigation covering the period between December 2021 and October 2023.
Within the scope of the investigation, house arrest was requested for 5 people, and a total of 1.5 million Euros in cash was seized.
NICOLO ZANIOLO IS ALSO INCLUDED
The reports stated that in addition to Sandro Tonali and Nicola Fagioli, who had previously been involved in an illegal betting investigation and received penalties as a result, names such as Nicolo Zaniolo, Alessandro Florenzi, Weston McKennie, Mattia Perin, Leandro Paredes, Angel Di Maria, Raoul Bellanova, Samuele Ricci, Cristian Buonaiuto, Matteo Cancellieri, and Adames Hector Firpo are also included in the investigation.
The reports alleged that during the examination of the phones of Tonali and Fagioli, who were penalized in October 2023, it was found that these two footballers acted as intermediaries for other names and handled collections.
It was stated that the footballers did not bet directly on football matches, but on different sports and games such as poker.
According to the allegations, they tried to hide their payments through a jeweler in Milan and used this place like a bank. It was reported that some transfers, which were made to appear as if they were for purchasing luxury watches, were actually illegal betting payments, and that the 1.5 million Euros seized were found at this jeweler.
