Following racist abuse directed at players in England and Italy yesterday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a statement on FIFA's social media account, emphasizing that stricter measures must be taken against racism in stadiums.
Noting that worldwide stadium bans and criminal sanctions for those who engage in racism are a necessity, Infantino stated, "In addition to the three-step process (match stopped, match re-stopped, match abandoned), an automatic forfeit should be imposed on the team whose fans have committed racism and caused the match to be abandoned."
Calling for tougher measures against racism, Infantino added, "The events that took place in Udine and Sheffield on Saturday are totally abhorrent and completely unacceptable."
