Following the home defeat of their closest rival Erzurumspor and Karagümrük's loss on the road in the 1. Lig, Kocaelispor has guaranteed its promotion to the Süper Lig after 16 years. Managed by İsmet Taşdemir, who led Bodrum FK to the Süper Lig last year, Kocaelispor has secured its promotion with 3 weeks remaining.

Last competing in the Süper Lig during the 2007-2008 season, Kocaelispor had fallen as far as the Regional Amateur League by the 2013-2014 season.
