Maraton İzmir kicks off for the 5th time: 600 athletes from 38 different countries to compete
Maraton İzmir, which holds the certificate for Turkey's fastest international road race, has kicked off for the 5th time, with 600 athletes from 38 different countries set to compete.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has held the fifth edition of Maraton İzmir. Technical Director Ersun Yanal was among those who gave the start for the 42-kilometer and 10-kilometer races in the major event.
600 ATHLETES FROM 38 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TO COMPETE
Turkey's fastest marathon, which has been awarded the Road Race Label by World Athletics, began at 08:00 in front of the former İZFAŞ General Directorate building on Şair Eşref Boulevard.
In the 42-kilometer race, athletes will reach Karşıyaka via Alsancak and turn back before reaching the Bostanlı Pier. The athletes will then follow the same route along Mustafa Kemal Sahil Boulevard to reach İnciraltı, turn back from Marina İzmir, and complete the race at the starting point.
A total of 600 athletes from 38 different countries will compete in the race. The 10-kilometer race, part of Maraton İzmir, also started on the same day and from the same location at 07:00. Athletes will turn back from the Köprü tram stop on Mustafa Kemal Sahil Boulevard and finish the race on the opposite lane of the former İZFAŞ building in Fuar Kültürpark. 5 thousand athletes will take part in the 10-kilometer race.
On the other hand, Tsegaye Getachew broke the Turkish record in 2021 with a time of 2:09:35, and Maraton İzmir earned the title of the fastest course run in Turkey. With this record, Maraton İzmir entered the 2021 World Athletics world rankings in 20th place. In 2022, the famous Kenyan athlete Lanny Rutto managed to further improve the record with an impressive time of 2:09:27.
