Starting his career as a player and playing for seven seasons, Adelman served as head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves from 1989 to 2014. With the success he demonstrated over the years, he achieved a total of 1,042 victories in the 1,791 games he coached in the NBA, earning the title of the 10th winningest head coach in league history.

Adelman was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his contributions to basketball.
