Speaking to the Brazilian media outlet Globo after the match played at New York New Jersey Stadium, the 34-year-old footballer announced his decision with a brief statement.
"I tried, but it's over. I'm putting an end to it here."
Neymar scored 80 goals in 130 appearances for the Brazil national team. The star forward concludes his international career as the "Samba Boys'" all-time leading goalscorer.
Brazil's early exit from the tournament also marked the conclusion of Neymar's national team journey.
