Portugal becomes France's opponent. Ronaldo misses penalty
In the Round of 16 of the 2024 European Football Championship (EURO 2024), Portugal advanced to the quarterfinals to face France after defeating Slovenia 3-0 in a penalty shootout, following a match that remained scoreless through regular time and extra time.

Portugal, which finished as the leader of Group F with 6 points in the European Football Championship held in Germany, faced Slovenia, which finished 3rd in Group C with 3 points, in the Round of 16. The match, played in Frankfurt, was officiated by Italian referee Daniele Orsato.
Jure Balkovec, who played for Alanyaspor last season, started the match in the starting 11. While Portugal created chances with Cristiano Ronaldo, Leao, and Palhinha in the first half, Slovenia also entered the opponent's penalty area with quick counterattacks. In the 55th minute, during a free kick earned just outside the penalty arc for Portugal, who increased their pressure in the second half, goalkeeper Oblak did not allow a goal from Cristiano Ronaldo's powerful shot.
The Slovenians, who retreated to their own half, tried to develop an attack with Sesko in the 61st minute but could not find a result. Neither team could score in the remaining time, and the regular time ended in a 0-0 draw.
In the 103rd minute of the match, which went to extra time, Jota fell to the ground following a challenge by Drkusic, and referee Orsato pointed to the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Oblak managed to save the powerful shot by diving to his left during the penalty kick taken by Cristiano Ronaldo.
When the first half of extra time ended, Ronaldo could not hold back his tears. In the 115th minute, Sesko, who stole the ball from Pepe in midfield, advanced rapidly to the penalty area, but goalkeeper Costa deflected his one-on-one shot with his feet. The tough match went to a penalty shootout.

While Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva converted their penalties for Portugal, goalkeeper Diogo Costa managed to save the penalties taken by Ilicic, Balkovec, and Verbic for Slovenia. Ronaldo, who could not capitalize on the penalty during extra time, managed to send the ball into the net during the penalty shootout. Roberto Martinez's students, who won the penalty shootout 3-0, secured their ticket to the quarterfinals.
Portugal, which has reached the quarterfinals for the 8th time in its history, will face France in this round on Friday, July 5.
