Beşiktaş Council Board President Tevfik Yamantürk spoke to TV100 regarding the tense incident that took place last weekend involving former president Hasan Arat. Yamantürk explained the process and the behind-the-scenes details of the physical intervention that has been widely discussed by the public.
"HASAN ARAT PROVOKED EVERYONE"
Describing what happened, Yamantürk said, "I was not aware that Hasan Arat would come to the meeting. I saw him in the hall. While I was saying 'welcome' to those in the front row, I reached out my hand. He turned his head while reaching out his hand to me. I said, 'When greeting or shaking hands, you look each other in the eye.' After saying 'Know your place, you insolent person,' he threatened me three times by saying, 'We will meet outside.' Upon this, I reacted," he stated.
Yamantürk stated that Arat had registered himself for the Council speaking list in 17th place, adding, "Former president Ahmet Nur Çebi was in 19th place and he came up and spoke. The same procedure worked here as well. However, while people were waiting for an account of the 100 million euros, Hasan Arat went off-topic and talked about light bulbs and stadium lighting. This naturally caused reactions in the hall. While we, as the Council, were trying to lower the tension, he continued his behavior that would further agitate the environment," he said.
"He was speaking with imperative verbs like 'you will be quiet' to one person and 'sit down' to another. We said let's take a break so the environment would calm down. But he insisted, saying, 'I will speak now, otherwise I won't speak, I will leave.' This escalated the tension. Afterwards, he said some things to President Serdal. We did not create this environment; Hasan Arat himself provoked everyone. I wanted the meeting to proceed in a healthy manner. However, he turned his back and threatened and provoked me again by saying, 'We will meet outside.' When he continued his threats, these events occurred. Yes, it should not have ended this way," he said.
"OUR FORMER PRESIDENTS CALLED"
Stating that he received messages of support from former presidents after the events, Yamantürk said, "For 8 years, I have accomplished important work with my friends. I have never been someone who likes to be in the foreground. Beşiktaş is above everything. I only defended the rights of the club. I asked for an account of the 100 million Euros. Of course, this situation caused sadness in the community, but at the same time, support came. All of our former presidents called. We only couldn't speak with one because he was abroad. I was called from all over Turkey. Everyone knows that I showed this attitude for Beşiktaş," he said.
CLEAR RESPONSE TO RESIGNATION AND EXPULSION DISCUSSIONS
Council President Tevfik Yamantürk responded to the allegations of resignation and expulsion that have come to the agenda with the following words:
"I will never resign. I would be betraying those who voted for this position. I have not had any behavior that would require resignation. If I were to resign because I protected the rights of Beşiktaş, then there would be no one left to defend the rights of this club. I am asking for an account of the 100 million Euros. Hasan Arat should answer this and should be expelled from the club. For my own part, I have no expectation of being expelled because I have not done anything worthy of expulsion. I will continue this duty until my term ends, that is, until September 15. I will not be a candidate afterwards."
