Criticizing the performance displayed by the national team, Çelikler argued that the players did not arrive at the tournament sufficiently prepared.

Directing criticism at the national players and stating that expectations were not met, Çelikler said, "You starred in commercials, you took the bonuses. Now you need to go out on the pitch and perform at a World Cup level."
