In the first week of the European Football Championship held in Germany, Spain and Croatia faced off at the Berlin Stadium in Group B. In the match officiated by English referee Michael Oliver, Spain took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute with a goal from Alvaro Morata.
In the 32nd minute, Fabian Ruiz sent the ball into the net following a pass from Pedri, extending the lead to 2. With Dani Carvajal finding the back of the net in the 45+2nd minute, Spain headed into the locker room with a 3-0 lead. Croatia was awarded a penalty in the 80th minute.
Goalkeeper Simon saved Petkovic's penalty shot, and Petkovic sent the rebound into the net. However, the referee disallowed the goal due to a rule violation. As there were no further goals in the remaining minutes, the match ended with a 3-0 victory for Spain.
