Sporting Manager Rui Borges: Galatasaray scored with the help of luck

In the first week of the 2026-2027 UEFA Champions League league phase, Galatasaray was defeated 3-1 away by Sporting. After the match, Sporting manager Rui Borges evaluated the contest in a press conference.

Borges stated that starting with a win was important for their young squad, noting that Galatasaray played with high intensity in the first half. The Portuguese manager remarked on the yellow-reds' goal, saying, "They scored a goal with a tactical playmaker, and also with a bit of help from luck."

Expressing that they struggled to adapt to the game in the early stages but later established balance, Borges emphasized that they were more competitive and stronger in one-on-one duels in the second half. Borges also said that they did not allow Galatasaray to create dangerous positions in front of their own goal.

Calling on Sporting fans, Rui Borges stated that continued support from the stands is necessary to be successful in the Champions League. Borges said, "Things will not always go well, and when things do not go well, we will need this support even more."

Explaining that they worked on different options in attack to break Galatasaray's pressure, Borges noted that his players disrupted the balance of the opposing defense through positional changes.
