Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe made statements ahead of their league match against Crystal Palace.
Regarding their Italian player Sandro Tonali, who is the subject of a betting investigation, Howe said, "I received a phone call from Dan Ashworth (Newcastle United Sporting Director) during the international break. It was a complete surprise for both of us. But these things can happen when you are in this business. My first thought was to make sure Sandro was okay. This is a difficult time."
Stating that Tonali is available to play in the Crystal Palace match, Howe said, "We have been together a lot. I think he trained twice this week. He is available to be in the squad. He has worked very well."
The English manager, who noted that he will decide whether Tonali will play against Crystal Palace despite being eligible, said, "He has had a very difficult week. He is dealing with a lot. I see him for a few hours a day, but from what I can see, he is managing it well and is dealing with his emotions incredibly strongly. But there is a lot underneath all of this, so I have to make a decision. I will try to make the best decision for the team."
