Göztepe and Fenerbahçe faced off in the 2nd week of the Süper Lig.
It was alleged that some Fenerbahçe fans were not allowed into the stadium during the match played in İzmir, despite having tickets. Footage emerged showing police using pepper spray on both the fans outside and those in the stands.
Following this, Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç went down to the pitch in the 50th minute of the match and headed toward the Fenerbahçe stands. Göztepe fans threw foreign objects at Koç. Later, Fatih Özkan, who had an accreditation card and had entered the pitch, attacked Ali Koç. It was revealed that Özkan had previously been tried for aiding and abetting "attempted intentional homicide" following incidents at a Göztepe-Altay match.
Göztepe Honorary President Mehmet Sepil made a statement regarding the events that took place.
Stating that they would evaluate what happened while Fenerbahçe Club President Ali Koç was moving from the away stand toward the protocol stand and that they would try to understand the situation, Sepil said, "We will look at it tomorrow; how did the events unfold, and were the actions taken within the rules of football? We will examine everything. Let no one have any doubts. We will protect every right of Göztepe. If a mistake was made by the Göztepe side, we apologize, but Göztepe's rights will be protected at all costs."
