Strong start from Zeynep Sönmez: Advances past the first round in Rome

Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sönmez defeated Italian Jennifer Ruggeri in three sets at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, securing her place in the second round.

Competing in the WTA 1000 category Rome Open Tennis Tournament, our national athlete Zeynep Sönmez faced local favorite Jennifer Ruggeri of Italy in her first main draw match. In the match played on the clay courts at the Foro Italico, Zeynep fell behind after losing the first set 6-4, but staged a quick recovery.

Breaking her opponent's serve three times in the second set, the national tennis player won the set 6-2 to level the match. Taking full control in the final set, Zeynep Sönmez secured another 6-2 victory to win the match 2-1.

Following the grueling match that lasted a total of 2 hours and 7 minutes, Zeynep Sönmez succeeded in advancing to the next round of the Rome Open, where she is appearing in the main draw for the first time in her career. Zeynep, who is ranked 65th in the world, boosted her morale with this victory and now awaits her opponents in the later stages of the tournament.
