The journey from a refugee camp to the NBA arena

Khaman Maluach fled the conflicts in his home country during his childhood and took refuge in Uganda with his family. His basketball talent, discovered there in a refugee camp, first took him to the NBA's "Basketball Without Borders" camp, and then to the NBA Academy Africa in Senegal.

A YOUNG STAR AT THE FIBA WORLD CUP

Maluach developed rapidly at the academy in Senegal and drew attention. While still only 16, he played for the South Sudan National Team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and stood out as one of the youngest players in the tournament.

This experience demonstrated that he could compete on the international stage.

SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE AT DUKE UNIVERSITY

Following his success at the NBA Academy Africa, Maluach joined Duke University, one of the prominent teams in college basketball. He drew attention with his performance during his rookie year in the 2024-2025 season. Standing out particularly with his rebounding and shot-blocking abilities, the young player reached the maturity to enter the NBA Draft by playing with double-digit numbers per game.

TRANSITION TO THE PHOENIX SUNS VIA TRADE

A major trade that took place in the summer of 2025 opened a new chapter in Maluach's career. In this three-team trade between the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, and Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant moved to Houston, while Maluach and future draft rights were sent to the Phoenix Suns. Thus, Maluach, who wore a Houston Rockets hat on draft night, officially became a Phoenix Suns player.

A NEW BEGINNING WITH THE PHOENIX SUNS

As the Phoenix Suns rejuvenate their roster, they view Maluach as an important investment for the future. With his 2.18-meter height and impressive defensive skills, he is expected to take on a significant role as a defensive and rebounding force in the Suns' younger lineup.

Maluach also earned the title of the youngest African player in NBA draft history to be selected from an African academy.
