The secret to the success of 24-year-old Mete Gazoz, who has written his name in golden letters in the history of Turkish archery and sports and has recently become an inspiration for many children to start sports, is consistency and hard work.
An annual strength, endurance, performance, national and international competition, and regeneration program is implemented for Gazoz.
The program, prepared by National Teams Technical Director Yusuf Göktuğ Ergin and his team, is implemented by the athletes at national team training camps.
Mete Gazoz has managed to secure his place at the top by preparing with an average of 600 shots daily, 3,500 weekly, 12,000 monthly, and 120,000 annually.
As part of the 2024 Paris Olympics goals, a new season plan has been created for Mete Gazoz, Ulaş Berkim Tümer, and Muhammed Abdullah Yıldırmış, who have already secured a team quota for the games. Within the scope of preparations for international competitions, athletes are given training programs in camps based on their individual physical characteristics, primarily running. Data such as calories, average heart rate, distance, endurance, mental state, and the number of training sessions for the athletes are closely monitored during running and training.
Turkish Archery Federation President Abdullah Topaloğlu said that they are moving toward their goal within a plan involving management, technical staff, and athletes for sustainable sporting success.
Emphasizing that success can be achieved through planned work, Topaloğlu stated, "Our technical staff creates a work plan based on national and international competitions. In order to implement this plan, we provide the most suitable working environment by activating our necessary financial and supporting apparatus without allowing any interruptions. This harmonious work has also been a factor in the rise of the success graph of Turkish archery in recent years. Our athletes also reach their goals by participating in the prepared program at the highest level."
Turkish Archery National Teams Technical Director Yusuf Göktuğ Ergin explained that talented athletes from lower age groups are identified, their development is monitored, and they are supported through development camps.
Expressing that they prioritize preparing athletes for life in terms of education, social life, mental, and sporting success, Ergin said, "We implement a regular work program. Since momentary successes will not lead us to our desired goal, we remain loyal to our daily, weekly, monthly, and annual programs. By implementing the program, we keep our athletes fit and maintain their performance levels at the highest level. We constantly examine all the data of our athletes."
Emphasizing that a new season plan has also been created for athletes who have secured a quota for the 2024 Paris Olympics and those who will participate in the quota struggle, Ergin noted the following:
"There is an expectation of success from archery. In addition to our responsibilities, we want to create a training culture and awareness in archery in terms of mental and physical aspects for sustainable success. We have largely achieved this. We have secured a team quota in men's for the 2024 Paris Olympics. There will also be quota competitions for women, and when we succeed in that as well, we will go to the Olympics in a more advantageous position. To write new success stories in Turkish archery, we will direct every arrow shot by the athletes to the target within a plan. If our goal is success, every single arrow will be shot for the championship."
Mete Gazoz won the gold medal in the individual recurve category at the 2023 World Archery Championships held in Berlin, the capital of Germany, between July 31 and August 6.
The Recurve Men's National Team, consisting of Mete Gazoz, Ulaş Berkim Tümer, and Muhammed Abdullah Yıldırmış, won the silver medal and secured a quota for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
