Kartal, whose tenure ended in 2015, was brought back to lead the yellow-navy team in the second half of the 2021-2022 season. In his 6-month second term at Fenerbahçe, the experienced coach managed 21 matches and achieved an average of 1.95 points per game.

Most recently serving the yellow-navy team in the 2023-2024 season, İsmail Kartal achieved an average of 2.40 points per game in 58 matches. Despite collecting 99 points in the Süper Lig that season, Fenerbahçe finished the season in second place behind Galatasaray, who had 102 points.
