Verdict in Spanish football racism case: A first has occurred
The first prison sentence for racism in Spanish football has been handed down to three Valencia fans for their racist remarks against Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior.

In Spain's top football league (LaLiga), the court has announced its verdict in the case regarding racist insults directed at Vinicius from the stands during the Valencia-Real Madrid match played on May 21, 2023.
The court sentenced the three defendants, who were tried for racist insults against the Brazilian footballer, to 8 months in prison each, a two-year ban from entering stadiums, and ordered them to pay the legal costs.
This has been recorded as the first prison sentence handed down in Spain regarding racism as a result of a complaint filed by the LaLiga organization.
During the hearing, the defendants, aged between 18 and 21, apologized to Vinicius, LaLiga, and Real Madrid, and issued a statement acknowledging that their actions were wrong.
Following the court's decision, Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, the organization to which Spain's first and second football leagues are affiliated, stated, "This ruling is great news for the fight against racism in Spain. It repairs the damage suffered by Vinicius and sends a clear message to those who go to the stadium to insult that they will be identified, reported, and face criminal prosecution."
