Competing in the season's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, Zeynep Sönmez delivered an impressive performance against Hungarian tennis player Anna Bondar to advance to the third round. The 23-year-old national athlete, currently ranked 112th in the world, defeated world number 74 Bondar 2-0 with set scores of 6-2 and 6-4 in their second-round match held in Melbourne.
In the match, which lasted approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on Court 7, Sönmez managed to break her opponent's serve 4 times and established a 24-10 lead in winners. The young tennis player finished the match with 20 unforced errors.
With this victory, Sönmez earned the title of the first Turkish athlete to reach the third round of the Australian Open, and her next opponent has been determined. World number 94 Yulia Putintseva advanced to the next round by defeating French player Elsa Jacquemot with set scores of 6-1 and 6-2, setting up a match against Sönmez.
The third-round match between Zeynep Sönmez and Putintseva will be played on Friday, January 23.
