Flip-flop ban in popular park: 132,000 TL fine for non-compliance

Those dreaming of a relaxing summer holiday on the Italian Riviera are being met with surprise by a footwear restriction at Cinque Terre National Park. In this natural wonder, which attracts millions of domestic and international tourists every year, the use of flip-flops, backless sandals, or flimsy flat-soled shoes on hiking trails has been strictly prohibited.

The Cinque Terre National Park administration explains that they have taken this decision to ensure the safety of visitors on rocky and rugged trails. Those who enter the trails without appropriate hiking or sports shoes are subject to significant fines, starting from 50 Euros and reaching up to 2,500 Euros (approximately 132,000 TL). Teams stationed in the park conduct continuous inspections on the hiking paths, and tourists who do not comply with the specified rules are warned immediately.

This rule is also applied uncompromisingly on challenging routes such as the legendary "Blue Trail." Authorities point out that the ban in question does not apply to village centers; however, they emphasize that the measure is vital to prevent potential accidents and rescue operations in steep and stony areas.

Footwear restrictions in Italy also appear unexpectedly in other tourist regions. For example, on the island of Capri, a regulation in effect since the 1960s prohibits walking around in flip-flops, sandals, or wooden clogs that make noise while walking. Authorities state that this rule is important for preserving the peace and quiet of the island.
