Autopsy report released for 7-year-old Yüsra, who died at the hospital where she went for a cold

Yüsra Türkoğlu (7), one of the 4 children of the Türkoğlu family, was taken to Bursa City Hospital by her father, Cemil Türkoğlu, and mother, Azime Buse Türkoğlu, around 20:00 because she had a spring cold.

According to the Türkoğlu family's claims, 7-year-old Yüsra was administered the wrong IV fluid while receiving treatment there. Little Yüsra began to deteriorate half an hour after the IV was administered. Later, another doctor who arrived informed the family that something had gone wrong.

According to the Türkoğlu family's claims, 7-year-old Yüsra was kept on the same stretcher for 10 hours, and her eyes began to swell, her stomach began to ache, her blood pressure dropped, and her heart rate began to accelerate.

When the cardiology doctor arrived at the start of the morning shift, they stated that the child's condition was critical. The doctor later informed the family that Yüsra, who had been moved to intensive care, had suffered repeated cardiac arrests and had been intubated as a result.

The Türkoğlu family was devastated and suffered a nervous breakdown upon receiving the news of Yüsra's death.

PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY REPORT RELEASED

The preliminary autopsy report by the Council of Forensic Medicine for 7-year-old Yüsra Türkoğlu, who lost her life due to the wrong IV fluid, has been released. The report identified the accumulation of bloody fluid under and to the left of the heart, in the middle of the chest, in the right and left lungs, and in the heart wall, as well as hemorrhaging on the side of the neck.

Stating that permission for an investigation has not yet been granted despite 3 months having passed since the incident, Lawyer Erkan Behçet Arıkan spoke as follows:

"Yüsra Türkoğlu applied to Bursa City Hospital with her parents on May 19, 2024, with complaints of a cold. Yüsra, who walked into the hospital, passed away following an intervention that we estimate was the result of the hospital's faulty medical procedures.

After her death, an investigation was launched by the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. A letter was written to the relevant ministry unit to grant permission for an investigation into the physicians who performed the intervention and the responsible persons in the pediatric clinic, and a forensic medicine report was requested.

The basic assumption regarding the medically applied interventions causing the death was a heart condition. However, the Council of Forensic Medicine, in its preliminary report, stated that the condition was not the result of a heart condition, and a preliminary report was obtained stating that Yüsra did not have any cardiological heart condition, and the file has been referred to the Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine for full examinations.

During this period, permission for an investigation was requested from the Ministry of Health, but despite 3 months having passed since the incident, no investigation permission request has been issued yet. This investigation permission is extremely important for the progress of the file and the integrity of the judicial process, and we request that the ministry units act with sensitivity regarding the matter.

The physicians who performed the intervention are still continuing their duties at Bursa City Hospital. The hospital is currently still intervening in and treating children. This situation carries a great risk for public health.

For the sake of public health and the progress of the prosecutor's file, we demand that the process be examined with sensitivity by the relevant ministry units and that the investigation permissions be granted as soon as possible."

Father Cemil Türkoğlu said, "As we have claimed from the very first day, our child died entirely as a result of a doctor's error at the hospital. In this process, our child fell victim to murder in an attempt to save the doctor and cover up their mistake. Despite 3 months having passed, they wanted us to give up on the incident and drop the matter by putting us under pressure. Our forensic medicine report has been released. The forensic medicine report has proven the accuracy of what we have been claiming since the first day."
