The Diyarbakır Kayapınar Municipality has taken a notable decision in response to the "Kurdish female patient" joke told by Koç Holding Honorary Chairman Rahmi Koç, which sparked public controversy. In a statement, the municipality announced that the tender process for the purchase of 11 Tourneo Courier vehicles produced by Otosan has been halted due to Koç's remarks.
The municipality's statement on the matter is as follows:
“As the Kayapınar Municipality, we do not accept derogatory and discriminatory rhetoric targeting Kurdish women. With an understanding based on women's freedom and the equality of peoples, we clearly state that we stand against such approaches.
Following the tender conducted by our municipality for the purchase of 11 Otosan-produced Tourneo Courier vehicles to be used in our operations, the procurement process was canceled due to the remarks made by Koç Holding Honorary Chairman Rahmi Koç regarding Kurdish women, which drew public backlash, even though the process had reached the finalization stage.
This decision is a result of the DEM Party's women-liberationist local governance approach. Kurdish women have been the leading force in the struggle for freedom and democracy and have played a decisive role in building an equal and democratic life. We will not remain silent in the face of any approach that targets the dignity of Kurdish women."
