An explosion occurred at the TÜPRAŞ refinery located in the İzmit Gulf around noon.

Following the explosion, sirens began to sound in the area.

While TÜPRAŞ is known as Turkey's largest industrial facility, employees were evacuated after the explosion.

'DRILL' STATEMENT FROM BÜYÜKAKIN

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tahir Büyükakın stated the following:

"There was a planned drill within TÜPRAŞ, and all institutions were aware of it. The incident was a complication that occurred during that drill, and it is currently under control. There is no problem at the moment, the fire is under control, and there is no situation for our citizens to worry about."

Numerous ambulances and fire crews were dispatched to the scene.

12 INJURED

In a statement made by the company, it was noted that a fire occurred during compressor maintenance work at the Tüpraş İzmit Refinery around 13:30.

Stating that refinery teams intervened in the incident immediately, the statement included the following: "According to initial findings, 12 of our colleagues were slightly injured and have been referred to the hospital for examinations. The fire has been brought under control, and the unit has been taken out of service in a controlled manner. Our other operations at the refinery are continuing normally."
