Fire at Antalya Fishermen's Shelter: More than 20 boats reduced to ashes

A fire broke out at around 03:30 at the Fishermen's Shelter located in the Sarısu neighborhood of Antalya's Konyaaltı district. In the shelter, which houses hundreds of fishing and tour boats, flames that started for an as-yet-undetermined reason on the roadside spread to the area where boats had been hauled ashore.

Numerous teams were dispatched to the region for the flames, which grew rapidly due to the effect of the wind, which at times exceeded 60 kilometers per hour. Following the report made by shelter staff to the 112 Emergency Call Center, vehicles belonging to the Regional Directorate of Forestry and TOMA vehicles from the Antalya Police Department were dispatched to the region along with teams from the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department.

TEAMS PREVENTED THE SPREAD OF FLAMES

The teams intervened to prevent the growing fire from reaching the forested area and the boats moored at sea. Although the flames reached some boats, the fire in this area was extinguished through the efforts of the teams.

After an intervention lasting approximately 3 hours, the flames were completely brought under control. The teams then began cooling operations in the area.

In the fire, more than 20 boats, most of which were not in use and 3 of which had been hauled ashore for maintenance, burned. After the flames, only piles of iron remained of the boats. Cooling operations in the region were continued by fire, forestry, and police teams.

GOVERNOR ŞAHİN: NO DAMAGE TO MOORED BOATS

Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, who inspected the area after the fire, said that the boats moored at sea were not damaged.

Şahin made the following statements regarding the incident:

"Around 03:30 tonight, a fire that started on land in the Antalya Sarısu area spread to the Fishermen's Shelter. It jumped to the boats that had been hauled ashore in the shelter, and over 20 boats caught fire here. However, because the intervention was very fast, the flames that were spreading to the moored boats were prevented with the rapid intervention of the fire department, forestry teams, and the police's TOMA vehicles."

CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS BEING INVESTIGATED

Governor Şahin stated that there was no damage to the boats moored at sea other than those on land, and that the flames also spread to the forested area. Stating that the fire was prevented from growing in this region with the intervention of forestry teams, Şahin said that the Antalya-Kemer road was also closed to traffic for a while and would be reopened to transportation after the work was completed.

Stating that allegations that the fire was started by certain individuals are also being investigated, Şahin spoke as follows:

"Apart from the boats on land, there is no damage or loss to our moored boats. There was also a spread to the forested area. Forestry teams also intervened there quickly and prevented the fire from growing. The Antalya-Kemer road has been closed for a while, and the road will be reopened to traffic shortly. We narrowly escaped a very large fire. We wish everyone a speedy recovery. Our teams are investigating the cause of the fire. There is talk that some people started it. We will determine whether this is true or false. If it is true, judicial processes will be carried out very quickly."
