Fire at thermal power plant in Sivas

A fire that broke out at the Kangal Thermal Power Plant, operated by Konya Şeker, a subsidiary of Torku, was caused by welding work performed by a Chinese firm.

The fire started this afternoon in the chimney unit of the plant located in the Kangal district of Sivas. The fire grew rapidly and engulfed the entire unit. It was brought under control with difficulty through the intervention of fire crews from the Kangal municipalities. It was determined that the fire started in the flue gas treatment facility where filter work was being conducted.

The fire began when sparks from welding work performed by a Chinese firm ignited plastic waste. No one was injured in the fire, and cooling efforts are ongoing. The flue gas treatment facility, which was under construction, was completely destroyed and rendered unusable. It is stated that production will not be possible for a long time in the section where the fire occurred.

Had been on the agenda due to environmental pollution

Production at the Kangal Thermal Power Plant, operated by Konya Şeker, a subsidiary of Torku, was halted in 2000 by presidential directive on the grounds that its chimneys lacked filters and were polluting the air. On the other hand, the plant continues to remain on the agenda due to environmental pollution caused by coal ash.
