A patient receiving treatment at the Anesthesiology and Reanimation Intensive Care Unit of İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital lost their life yesterday. Dr. Hüseyin Emrah Keskin and his assistant Dr. Hazal Yaşar Çokyaman, who shared the news of the death with the relatives, were injured as a result of being assaulted by the patient's relatives.
Meanwhile, the Board of Directors of the İzmir Medical Chamber issued a statement regarding the incident. The statement noted the following:
"OUR COLLEAGUE WAS THREATENED"
"An immobile patient who had been receiving treatment for approximately 1 year in the Anesthesiology and Reanimation Intensive Care Unit of İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital passed away on the evening of 26.06.2024.
While our specialist and assistant colleagues on duty in the intensive care unit were sharing the news of the patient's death with the patient's relatives, one of the relatives attacked one of our colleagues, punching him in the head 3-4 times, and injured the arm of a female colleague. While our colleagues were waiting in the emergency department for a forensic report following the incident, one of the patient's relatives also threatened our colleague.
Immediately after learning of the incident, our Chamber's General Secretary Dr. Nuri Seha Yüksel and our Chamber's lawyer Mithat Kara arrived at the hospital, shared their support with our colleagues, and stood by our colleagues throughout the night regarding the initiation of the judicial process, the giving of statements, and the preparation of reports.
"ACTS OF VIOLENCE CANNOT BE JUSTIFIED"
The judicial proceedings for the 2 individuals who physically attacked and threatened our colleague are continuing at the police station. These individuals are expected to be referred to the courthouse on 27.06.2024.
No act of violence can be considered acceptable, regardless of the reason. It is impossible to accept this brutality.
Despite the administrators and health authorities who normalize violence in healthcare, try to drop it from the agenda, and ignore it, we will continue to fight against violence in healthcare and the approaches of the health authority.
We convey our get-well wishes to our colleagues. We will follow the judicial process and take the necessary initiatives to ensure that measures are taken against the security vulnerabilities in the hospital."
