The right to free public transportation granted to citizens over the age of 65 has become a subject of debate once again. It was determined that a citizen named Mehmet S., residing in Sivas, rode public buses exactly 3,365 times throughout 2025.

It was calculated that throughout the year, Mehmet S. made 90 thousand TL worth of trips thanks to his free pass.

Sivas Municipality, in a post on its social media account, included the statement, "Our buses are not for city tours! They are for transportation."

The issue quickly resonated on social media. A group of users argued that citizens over 65 cause congestion in public transport vehicles due to free access, and that imposing a limit would be appropriate. On the other hand, some individuals opposed the regulation, stating that the actions of a single individual cannot be a justification for restricting the free transportation rights of all retirees.

While the debates on social media continue, it was learned that Sivas Municipality is examining Karabük Municipality as an example. In Karabük, the right to free and unlimited boarding for retirees was abolished in recent months and replaced with a limit of 30 uses of public transportation per month.
