Historic building collapses in Fatih, Istanbul

A two-story historic abandoned building has partially collapsed in the Fatih district of Istanbul. While debris falling from the second floor of the building damaged a parked vehicle, the street was closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

According to the information obtained, the incident occurred around 04:00 in Söğütlü Bakkal Street in the Derviş Ali neighborhood. It is alleged that the collapse occurred for an undetermined reason in the two-story abandoned building, which municipal teams had previously taken precautions to secure by cordoning off the area.

Upon notification, fire, medical, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. The teams arriving at the location conducted an inspection of the building and its surroundings. Fortunately, there were no injuries as the street was empty at the time of the collapse.

STREET CLOSED TO TRAFFIC

Concrete and wooden pieces that broke off from the roof and the second floor of the building damaged a parked vehicle, and the street was closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Abdullah Ceylan Özbek, who resides on the street where the collapse occurred, stated, "We found the owner of the building. The owner had applied to the Fatih Municipality through the Monuments Board. However, they did not demolish it. The building came down on its own around 04:00, but thankfully there were no accidents or casualties, and no damage. The historic structure has now collapsed. Thankfully, there are no dead or injured. We were at home and learned about it after the collapse occurred."
