The search efforts for 10-year-old Onurcan Özdemir, a child with autism who went missing on the morning of May 24 after going to a pistachio orchard with his family in the Hasanoğlu neighborhood of Gaziantep's Araban district, have ended in deep sorrow. The tragic news came after a 15-day mobilization. Onurcan's lifeless body was found in the Euphrates River.
A team of approximately 1,000 people, consisting of AFAD, gendarmerie, police, fire department, and NGOs, conducted the search using drones, boats, and tracking dogs. The operations, carried out in difficult terrain, steep cliffs, and mountainous areas, were expanded, particularly through the use of technological equipment with night vision. Following a tip-off from local residents, the Rumkale Gendarmerie Boat Team Command found the body floating in the water by the riverbank, and it was handed over to the family.
GOVERNOR'S OFFICE ISSUED A STATEMENT
In an official statement from the Gaziantep Governor's Office, it was stated that the lifeless body of Onurcan Ö. was found in the Kırkak location of the Elif neighborhood in the Euphrates River. The body was identified by his father, Murat Özdemir. The gendarmerie has initiated judicial proceedings regarding the incident, and the body has been sent to the forensic medicine institute to determine the exact cause of death.
