Turkey cannot escape its cycle of violence. While a culture of impunity emboldens attackers, life is turning into a living hell for ordinary citizens. The latest example occurred in Eskişehir: 14-year-old kickboxer M.K. was brutally beaten by 8 people at a tram stop.

While the attackers recorded the moments of torture on their mobile phones, no detentions or arrests took place after the incident.

THEY BEAT THE CHILD ATHLETE WITH STICKS

M.K., a Turkish champion and WAKO World Cup bronze medalist, was attacked on the evening of July 16 at the Emek neighborhood tram stop in Eskişehir while returning from training. A group of 8 people, including children, first verbally harassed the young athlete. Taunts such as "Are you a fighter? Show us too" quickly turned into a physical assault.

The attackers, who continued to hit M.K. with sticks even after he fell to the ground, recorded all these moments on their mobile phones. M.K. was taken to the hospital with blows to his head and back. A brain trauma and a suspected shoulder blade fracture were identified at Eskişehir City Hospital.

HOSPITAL REPORT IS CLEAR: BATTERY, TRAUMA, SUSPECTED FRACTURE

Consultation reports issued by Eskişehir City Hospital included "head trauma resulting from battery" and "suspected scapula (shoulder blade) fracture." The reports recommended brain and cervical spine CT (computed tomography) scans and requested an orthopedic check-up.

MOTHER REBELS: "DID HE HAVE TO DIE LIKE MINGUZZI?"

Mother Meryem K., who both gave a statement at the police station and followed the hospital process after the incident, rebelled against what happened:

“My son is a licensed athlete in three disciplines. He has achievements in kickboxing, boxing, and taekwondo. He became the 2025 Turkish Champion and a world bronze medalist in the same year. He was returning from training that day. The attackers harassed him by saying, ‘Are you a fighter?’ Then they attacked him with sticks. It was said that there was CCTV footage, but we were not shown any recordings, nor were we given any information. There are no arrests. Did something have to happen to my child like it did to Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi?”

M.K: “THEY HIT MY HEAD WHILE I WAS ON THE GROUND”

Young athlete M.K. described the moment of the incident in his official statement on July 16:

“I had gotten off the tram. Three people approached me near the stop. I didn't know them. They said, ‘Are you a fighter? Come on, show us some fighting.’ I told them to leave. One punched me in the face, and another pulled out a stick. A person about 1.70 meters tall hit my head and back with the stick. I fell to the ground, and they kept hitting me.”

STATEMENTS TAKEN, NO ARRESTS

The statements of the 8 attackers were taken regarding the incident. However, despite the battery reports and the footage, the prosecutor's office did not issue any arrest warrants. The family is worried that the incident will be covered up and that justice will not be served.
