A gas cylinder explosion occurred at around 13:00 in a single-story house located on 7190 Street in the Bayraklı district of İzmir. According to allegations, 75-year-old Mustafa Demir, who lived alone in the house, lit his lighter to ignite the stove to brew tea when the cylinder exploded. The force of the blast caused the house to collapse completely.
RESCUED WITH THE HELP OF BYSTANDERS
Neighborhood residents who heard the sound of the explosion immediately notified the police, medical, and fire departments. Mustafa Demir, who was trapped under the rubble and suffered severe burns on his body, was pulled from the wreckage with the help of those nearby. Meanwhile, a person working at a business adjacent to the house was slightly injured after being struck by a piece of brick. After receiving initial intervention at the scene, the seriously injured Demir was taken to İzmir City Hospital by ambulance. The slightly injured citizen received outpatient treatment.
ADMITTED TO INTENSIVE CARE
Mustafa Demir's son, Umut Demir, who arrived at the scene after the explosion, stated that he was informed of the incident when his neighbors called him, saying, "They heard the sound of an explosion and called us. I left work and came here. I don't know exactly what happened. I am currently waiting for the authorities; they will go in and conduct an investigation, and then they will leave. My father is injured. I think he has some minor burns. He was taken to the hospital and is currently in intensive care. Perhaps he left the gas on earlier. He might have come back to brew tea, and the cylinder might have exploded at that moment. However, we cannot say anything for sure. But it was said that there was a gas leak inside. There is also a smell of gas inside. It was likely left on. He is an elderly man anyway. We are waiting; for now, we have received good news about my father, his condition is stable. We will go to the hospital after we finish our business here," he said.
NEIGHBORHOOD HEADMAN DESCRIBES THE MOMENTS
Doğançay Neighborhood Headman Arzu Nisa stated that she witnessed the moment of the explosion, saying, "While I was on the road, my three-wheeled motorcycle suddenly shook from the force of the explosion. Before I could even ask 'what happened,' smoke started coming out of a house. I came here immediately. At that moment, they were pulling Uncle Mustafa out. The area was covered in thick smoke, and everything was in a very bad state. This place was literally in ruins. Smoke was still coming out. I immediately called 112. Uncle Mustafa was lying on the ground. He was conscious, but his condition was quite bad. He was covered in blood and had severe burns on his body. Afterward, the police and fire department arrived at the scene. As far as we understand, the cylinder exploded while he was making tea. He had put the tea on, but there was a gas leak, and this caused the explosion," she said.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED
Following the explosion, police teams began an investigation at the scene, and it was reported that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
