Istanbul's socioeconomic landscape: Population shifting to the west

In Istanbul, Turkey's most populous province, which is home to nearly 20 percent of the country's population, a report has been prepared on the socioeconomic landscape of its 39 districts. According to the report, while population growth is accelerating in districts such as Beylikdüzü, Esenyurt, and Başakşehir, the population is trending downward in districts like Fatih, Kadıköy, and Şişli. The report indicates that Beylikdüzü has increased its population by 67 percent over the last 10 years.

WHICH ARE THE FIVE MOST DENSELY POPULATED DISTRICTS?

According to the report, the districts of Esenyurt, Küçükçekmece, Pendik, Ümraniye, and Bağcılar house 25 percent of the city's population.

Ahmet Sait Öner, an official from the ILKE Foundation who prepared the report, stated, "There is a population decline in districts such as Fatih, Kadıköy, and Şişli. While the population has decreased in these areas, it is showing a rapid upward trend toward the peripheral districts. For example, we see that the population in Beylikdüzü has increased by 67 percent in the last 10 years. We also see that the population is increasing rapidly in districts like Esenyurt and Başakşehir. Data reflects that the population in Fatih has fallen by 16 percent."

WHICH DISTRICT HAS THE LOWEST RENT?

Explaining that Şişli, Kadıköy, and Fatih stand out as trade and finance centers, while Esenyurt and Tuzla are industrial hubs, Öner stated that the lowest average for home rents is 15 thousand 500 liras in Esenyurt, while the highest average is 60 thousand liras in Sarıyer.

Öner noted that living alone is on the rise in the city, with one in every four households being a single-person household, and pointed out that the districts with high fertility rates are Esenyurt, Sultanbeyli, Sultangazi, and Sancaktepe.
