Notable change in Turkey's earthquake map: 215 new faults identified

With the studies conducted by the MTA, the number of active faults in Turkey has increased from 485 to 700. Geological Engineer Aysun Aykan stated that the 215 newly identified faults did not form recently but were uncovered through scientific research, noting that this data is of critical importance for reducing disaster risks.

Geological Engineer Aysun Aykan announced that as a result of research conducted by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), the number of active faults in Turkey has increased from 485 to 700. Aykan stated that the 215 newly identified active faults did not form recently, but were brought to light through scientific examinations and field studies.

Reminding that the active fault map published in 2013 included 485 faults, Aykan noted that this number has now reached 700. Aykan said, "These faults did not form recently. They were discovered as a result of earthquakes occurring in our country and field studies conducted. For example, although the North Anatolian Fault has existed for approximately 12 million years, it was defined in 1948 following the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake. The newly discovered faults have also been underground for tens of thousands or even millions of years."

NEW DATA ON EARTHQUAKE HAZARD EMERGES

Stating that the newly identified faults indicate that the earthquake hazard in Turkey may be higher than previously estimated, Aykan emphasized that this does not mean the earthquake risk has suddenly increased.

Aykan used the expressions, "We do not yet fully know the characteristics of these faults. However, determining their effects on residential areas and their risk factors is extremely important in terms of disaster management."

EMPHASIZED THE NEED TO CONTINUE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES

Pointing out that geological and paleoseismological research on the discovered faults must continue, Aykan said that identifying faults capable of producing earthquakes and examining their behavior is of strategic importance for reducing disaster risks.

Aykan said, "Identifying faults that can produce earthquakes and revealing their behavior is of strategic importance for reducing disaster risks. Knowing the faults, taking the necessary engineering precautions, and acting in accordance with current regulations will minimize loss of life and property."

Expressing that she finds the research conducted by the MTA important, Aykan stated that these studies, which contribute to the reduction of disaster risks, are of great value to the country.
