Outrage over house arrest for young driver involved in fatal accident in Beyoğlu

In the accident that occurred on the evening of March 31 in the Hacıahmet neighborhood of Beyoğlu, 17-year-old Mustafa E. drove onto the sidewalk in a light commercial vehicle belonging to his father and struck 59-year-old Abdulkerim Yavuz. The driver, who fled the scene after the accident, was apprehended by police and referred to the courthouse on charges of 'negligent homicide.' However, the court sentenced Mustafa E. to house arrest.

FAMILY REACTS: "THIS IS LIKE A REWARD"

Erhan Yavuz, the son of Abdulkerim Yavuz, objected to the decision, stating, "We thought the judge would issue an arrest warrant. However, we learned that a house arrest decision was made. This is almost like giving the child a reward. This decision is a situation that encourages children to commit crimes." Yavuz stated that the legal process is ongoing and that they expect justice to be served.

LEGAL PROCESS CONTINUES

Erhan Yavuz said, "We want justice to be served and for the judge to make a decision by showing empathy. If this incident had happened to someone in the judge's own family, would they have made the same decision? We are calling on the authorities; we want what is necessary to be done. We are currently waiting for the court and continuing our appeals for the individual to be arrested." The family expressed that the decision was unfair and that they hope their pain will be eased somewhat with an arrest warrant.
