She fell ill and died after eating a baked potato: Family seeks justice

A tragic incident in the Buca district of İzmir has turned a family's life upside down. On December 28, Servet Polat, her daughter Bahar Zeyrek, and her grandson Gökhan Zeyrek ate baked potatoes at a business in the Efeler neighborhood and visited the Buca Seyfi Demirsoy Training and Research Hospital on the same day with complaints of nausea and diarrhea. 

After receiving treatment, the family returned home, but they fell ill again the next day and were taken to the hospital once more.

DIED AT HOME 

After being discharged following their treatment, Servet Polat was found unresponsive in the bathroom of her home two days after the incident. Medical teams confirmed that Polat had lost her life.

SAMPLES TAKEN  

The family held the business where they ate the baked potatoes responsible for the incident and filed a complaint. It was learned that the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry took samples from the products at the business and that the workplace was temporarily closed.

''MY FRIENDS WERE ALSO POISONED''

Speaking about the incident, Bahar Zeyrek stated that her mother had hypertension and diabetes and said the following:

"My friends also ate baked potatoes from the same business and were poisoned. Our baked potatoes had carrot tarator, chicken, and sausage appetizers. My mother complained of nausea while eating the potato, but she continued to eat. My son also ate from the potato and is still unwell."

Servet Polat's autopsy was performed at the İzmir Forensic Medicine Institute, and her funeral was held in Buca. The family, who is waiting for the autopsy results, announced that they will initiate a legal battle after the detailed report is released. Expressing their determination, Zeyrek said, "We will not let this go; those responsible will be held accountable."
