Traffic law being updated: New regulations for in-car screens, sound systems, and APP license plates
With a new regulation prepared by the Ministry of Interior, rules regarding in-car multimedia and sound systems are being reorganized. While video playback while driving is being banned, limited freedom is granted for high-decibel speakers, a transition period is being initiated for APP license plates, and existing conditions for window tinting are being maintained.

Within the scope of the new regulation prepared by the Ministry of Interior, the framework for regulations regarding multimedia, sound systems, and license plate applications used in vehicles has begun to clarify. According to the report by Türkiye Gazetesi, the regulation, which is expected to be published at the end of this month, aims to resolve uncertainties in current practices.
NEW LIMITS ON MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS
While a complete ban on multimedia screens used in vehicles is not on the agenda, restrictions are being introduced for uses that risk driving safety. Systems that allow for hands-free navigation and phone use will continue to be permitted.
However, playing videos on screens while the vehicle is in motion will not be allowed. Systems that violate this rule will be identified during vehicle inspection station checks and traffic inspections, and penal actions will be applied. The position of the screen within the vehicle will not be a determining factor for inspection purposes.
RESTRICTIONS ON SOUND SYSTEMS
According to the new regulation, installing speakers that provide higher sound output than the original factory speakers will be permitted. However, the use of equipment such as subwoofers and bass boxes placed in the trunk or other areas that create extra sound power will be prohibited.
TRANSITION PERIOD FOR APP LICENSE PLATES
The use of license plates known in the public as "APP plates," which have been previously printed by chambers of drivers, will continue. No penalties will be applied for these plates, and there will be no cancellation.
However, chambers authorized to print license plates will be given until January 1, 2027, to comply with the standards. At the end of this period, the license plate printing authorities of chambers that do not make the necessary adjustments will be suspended for 6 months. During this process, the authority will be transferred to another chamber, and authorities will be re-granted to chambers that meet the requirements.
TRAFFIC SAFETY WILL BE THE PRIORITY
According to data, approximately 300 thousand people are injured and approximately 5 thousand people lose their lives in traffic accidents in Turkey every year. These data were among the determining factors in the new regulation.
It was stated that sanctions regarding violations that cause the majority of accidents, such as driving in the wrong lane, running red lights, driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding speed limits, and aggressive behavior in traffic, will continue as they are.
WINDOW TINTING PRACTICE REMAINS UNCHANGED
The current practice regarding window tinting and vehicle decals will be maintained. Provided that it does not obstruct the driver's view and does not make the interior of the vehicle completely invisible, number 1 and 2 grade tint may be used on side windows.
Applying tint to the windshield will remain prohibited as it is currently. Furthermore, the application of decals and stickers that are not registered on the vehicle's license will not be permitted.
