The occupancy rate in Turkish prisons is rising rapidly due to an increase in arrests and long periods of pre-trial detention.

According to a report by Sözcü, as of September 1, there are a total of 419,194 people in prisons with a capacity of 295,000. Of these individuals, 356,710 are recorded as convicts, while 62,484 are detainees.

In the face of this increase, the government has allocated a significant budget for the construction of new prisons. 1 billion 423 million 544 thousand TL will be spent on the construction of the Niğde Penal Execution Institution. The Tokat Niksar Prison will cost 897 million TL, and the Çorum Osmancık Penal Execution Institution will cost 1 billion 108 million TL.

A total of 11 new prisons will be built within the year 2025. A total resource of 23 billion 585 million TL is planned to be used for prisons by the end of 2027.
