The 2025 Address Based Population Registration System (ADNKS) data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has revealed the differences in population density among provinces. In 2025, when there was an average of 112 people per square kilometer across Turkey, Tunceli was the province with the lowest population density.
SPARSELY POPULATED PROVINCES
According to TÜİK data, there are 11 people per square kilometer in Tunceli. Following Tunceli, Ardahan ranked second with 19 people, while Erzincan and Gümüşhane had 21 people per square kilometer.
It was observed that the population is spread over a wide area in Erzincan, which has a surface area of 11,903 square kilometers.
ISTANBUL IN FIRST PLACE
The province with the highest population density was Istanbul. There are 2,943 people per square kilometer in the city. Istanbul was followed by Kocaeli with 633 people and Yalova with 395 people.
According to TÜİK's 2025 data, Turkey's total population was recorded as 86 million 92 thousand 168 people. While Istanbul was the most populous province with a population of 15 million 754 thousand 53, it was followed by Ankara, İzmir, Bursa, and Antalya.
