Type of gas identified in fire burning for 7 days in Kocaeli
Samples taken regarding the fire that broke out during soil survey drilling work in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli have yielded results. It has been determined that the fire, which has been ongoing for 7 days, is caused by methane gas.

In Kartepe, methane gas that surfaced during drilling work at a depth of approximately 47 meters at a metro construction site on Bedir Street in the Dumlupınar neighborhood ignited around 14:00 on February 17. Upon notification, AFAD, fire department, medical, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. The teams cordoned off the area and took security measures.
While fire crews extinguished the flames with a fire blanket on February 18, expert teams from the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) arrived at the region to take samples. After the samples were taken, the fire crews reignited the fire in a controlled manner. It was learned that while the samples taken to identify the type of burning gas were sent for analysis, the investigation is ongoing.
As the fire has been burning continuously for 7 days, the teams' work in the region continues.
